Deseret Morning News OREM - Organizers of the 17th annual Timpanogos Storytelling Festival are tr... Will IRS now target storyt
Instead of laying out money for newspaper advertisements or radio spots, they're investing in "swag" for those who spread the word about the event - bags full of gifts donated by sponsors for those who bring a friend.
The bags for the local festival will have a lot of the things festivalgoers need once they arrive: something to take off the canyon-breeze chill, a spot of cold water and, of course, chocolate.
Radene Hatfield, spokeswoman for the festival, which runs today through Saturday at Mount Timpanogos Park in Provo Canyon, said it's something new and different and if it goes well, they may stick with the bags of swag.
A blurb in the festival brochure says this: "When we ask attendees how they heard about the festival, they usually say, 'A friend told me.' This year we thought of a fun way to say thank you. If you bring a friend who is new to the festival on Friday or Saturday, each of you will receive a festival bag filled with a fleece blanket, water, lip balm, fudge and other goodies."
That's not much compared to the diamonds, iPods and trips in the bags given to Academy Award presenters. Those bags are estimated to be worth roughly $100,000.
Last year, the official Oscar bag included four nights in Hawaii at the Halekulani Hotel, handcrafted truffles in a silk box, a vintage silk kimono, a pump espresso machine, a pearl and diamond necklace and coupons for surfing lessons, spa treatments and personalized dog training.
Otherwise, it might turn what started out as a good idea into a not-so-goody goody bag, since the IRS decided this past March that the goody baskets handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences represent non-cash compensation.
Estimates show that if each of the 200 presenters received $100,000 baskets for each of the past three years, the taxable non-cash income would come to $60 million - money the IRS figures is owed the national coffers.
That's a nice chunk of change. The IRS is talking to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which hosted hosts "The 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" on Sunday.
