Dr. Deborah Sherman, oculoplastic surgeon at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., interpret... Lines on your face can say
Dr. Deborah Sherman, oculoplastic surgeon at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., interprets what the lines around your eyes and face and the anatomy of your muscles are communicating to others about your emotions and physical well-being.
The corners of the mouth also can say a lot about you. When corners point upward, they say you're happy; but when they stand down, that says you're mad or depressed.
Crow's feet are the lines that extend outward on the outsides of the eyes. Sherman said these lines are normal signs of aging, and people usually aren't bothered with crow's feet until they start to look weathered.
Sherman was a pioneer in researching the effectiveness of Botox to treat overactive, uncontrolled blinking. The first use of the popular cosmetic treatment was to make blinking muscles around the eyes relax.
Sherman said the drug has been studied in 75 countries. It's been approved for 20 medical conditions and has been in use for more than 16 years.
“I've found by just putting those lines in a temporary time out, I can create a facial expression that goes from turbulence to tranquility,” Sherman said.
Botox cosmetic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use only in the area between the brows, but Sherman said experienced doctors can use it in many areas of the face, including the forehead, crow's feet around eyes, to tip corners of the mouth and in the wrinkles of the neck.
Sherman said choosing the right doctor is key. She said to look for one with the right training. She recommends having a thorough facial analysis by the doctor and to use a master injector — someone who is well trained and experienced in using Botox.
Sherman said a 13-year study conducted on identical twins showed the twin who had treatments two to three times a year had fewer lines than the sibling who had a Botox treatments only in years three and seven of the study.
Sherman said she doesn't endorse Botox parties. She said the procedure needs to be done in a medical setting in the hands of a trained medical technician.
Sharon Dugey, 55, of Clear Lake has gone to Moliver for a mid-cheek facelift, forehead lift, laser treatments, Restylane fillers for lines around lips and removal of heavy skin around eyes.
She started having procedures done seven years ago. Moliver did a necklift on her two years ago, and she gets Restylane lip fillers done every six months. She's had five treatments so far.
Living near the coast is bad for your skin if you spend a lot of time on the water, Moliver said. You get a double whammy with the rays from the sun and the reflection from the water.
There are many creams on the market that claim they can do the same job as Botox injections, but Sherman said if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Moliver agrees that a healthy diet with a lot of antioxidants built into the fruits and vegetables will go a long way to giving you healthy skin.
