ORLANDO -- A 3-year-old Iraqi girl and her father were scheduled to arrive in Orlando today so the child, Alaa' Khalid Hamdan, can have a chance to avert permanent blindness.

Alaa' was peppered by shrapnel May 3, when a tank round hit her home in Qaim, Iraq, said Cole Miller, an activist in Los Angeles whose organization, NoMoreVictims.org, arranged the trip.

A local surgeon and hospital in Orlando have donated their services but have asked the group not to publicize it because they don't have the resources to help everyone in need.

Miller said it wasn't clear whether doctors will be able to save the child's left eye, but without surgery, she could lose vision in both eyes.

Rich McKay, Anthony Colarossi and Sarah Lundy of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report. Information from The Associated Press also was used.
