Janet Jordan had just finished chemotherapy and was awaiting surgery when something even more life-disrupting than breastcancer hit: Hurricane Katrina.

The Mandeville, La., resident had to flee the home she shared with her son and daughter-in-law on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain. Eventually, she would make her way north — far north — to her brother's apartment in St. Cloud.
