TRENTON--City detectives yesterday began the maddening task of investigating one more "criminal attempted homicide" involving one moreyoung man cut down on the street by bullets to his head.

Keith Harris, 25, of the 200 block of Highland Avenue was shot in the parking lot of the Candlelight Lounge, 24 Passaic St., at 10:56 p.m Tuesday night.

He had been outside on the street in the 500 block ofBrunswick Avenue, warming up his wife’s car for her on Oct. 18 when he was shot in the right side of the head.

His passing marked the 25th homicide in Trenton this year. There were only 18 all of last year. The all-time homicide record of 27 was set in 1970 and 1979.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Mr. McClung," reported Detective Sgt. Pedro Medina, TPD spokesman, "and our condolences and prayers go to the family.

"We want to assure everyone that this incident, as with any other senseless killing, will be investigated until we can put those responsible behind bars."

Head shootings have come fast and furious in the past month, since 15-year-old Robert Simmons III was cut down on his front porch at 433 Martin Luther King Blvd. on Oct. 6, along with a pal, Jameil Hearren, 20.

Then Rodney Ellis, 31, was shot in the jaw somewhere in the city on Oct. 17--cops don’t know where--and strolled into Fuld suffering a fractured jaw, skull and spine.

Then on Oct. 23, a 40-year-old resident of the Rescue Mission, Dwayne Eugene Eubanks, was shot in the head as he walked in front of 701 S. Broad St. at 2:17 that Sunday morning. His death the next day was No. 24 in the city this year.

On Oct. 29, Keith Hunt, 22, was plugged once in the brain at 12:30 a.m. on Cooper Street near the Kingsbury East Tower high-rise apartment building.

Asked if there’s a gang war going on, police say they don’t know. Detectives either are stymied for lack of witnesses, and don’t know motives to these seemingly random shootings, or whether they’re gang-related or not, Medina said.

"This type of crime is outrageous," said Lt. Stephen Varn of the TPD Criminal Investigation Bureau, "and definitely will not ever be tolerated by the members of this department.

"The police department needs the cooperation and assistance of the public and citizens of this city to help bring an end to these senseless tragedies."

Acting Sgt. Edgar Rios added, "the public are our ears and eyes, and we hope that anyone with any type of information will take the time to call.

TPD Director Joseph Santiago said the detectives "have my unconditional support and all the resources needed are available to them to continue to solve this and any other violent crime committed in our city."
