HEMPSTEAD — The Jets were going to be facing his old Dolphins team in Miami a week from Sunday, and Jay Fiedler was hoping to finally be ready to return from his Week 3 injury. But that won't be happening. The quarterback's season is over, his shoulder damage too much to overcome.
Coach Herman Edwards announced yesterday that Fiedler will have to undergo surgery, perhaps as early as this week. Seven plays after Chad Pennington went down for the year with a torn rotator cuff against Jacksonville, Fiedler suffered a dislocation and a torn labrum.
The Jets are unsettled at the pivotal position heading into the offseason, and it's always possible the 33-year-old Long Island native's first season here could be his last.
This and that: Dewayne Robertson is questionable for Sunday's Oakland game with a quad injury, and Edwards said the defensive tackle will be a game-time decision. ... Rookie right corner Justin Miller is expected to start for the fifth straight game even though David Barrett was able to return from his eye injury and play as a reserve in Sunday's loss at New England. ... The Heisman Trophy will be awarded tomorrow night, and Vinny Testaverde, the 1986 Heisman winner, said he voted for USC running back Reggie Bush.
